The best way to roast garlic is in the oven. If you’ve never roasted an entire head of garlic before, you’re in for a delicious treat. Roasted garlic still tastes like garlic, but roasting garlic brings a much milder and somewhat sweet flavor. Roasting garlic is easy and worth learning to make because it adds so much flavor and can be used in many recipes.
This blog post describes how to roast garlic in the oven, as well as how to use and store it. Let’s get started!
Here’s how to Roast Garlic in the Oven
1. Gather what you need for the roasted garlic.
- whole bulbs of garlic
- olive oil
- aluminum foil
2. Prepare the Whole Garlic by removing any loose papery skins from the garlic bulb. At the grocery store, you’ll want to select whole garlic bulbs that are compact. They’ll have fewer loose skins and the garlic cloves will stay together when you cut the bulb.
3. Wash the garlic and pat it dry.
4. Cut through the garlic about 1/4 of the way down from the stem, not the roots, which is the widest part of the bulb.
5. Place the root side of the garlic down on an aluminum foil square and the top 1/4 of the garlic along the side. Over the cut side of the garlic, drizzle 1 Tablespoon of oil. You can use pre-cut aluminum foil sheets or regular aluminum foil. The pre-cut sheets of foil are 12″ X 10 3/4″ and the size works well for roasting the garlic.
6. Seal the garlic in the aluminum foil square by bringing the corners together at the top.
7. Place the foil packets with the garlic directly on the oven rack (sealed side up) or on a baking sheet or pan.
8. Check the garlic after 45 minutes to see if it is starting to get soft and brown. It’s best to have some brown caramelization on the garlic and the total cook time can vary depending on the size of the garlic. I find that it takes about 60 minutes on average. It just depends on the size of the garlic. If you have large garlic and it takes longer, that’s okay too!
How to Use Oven Roasted Garlic
Keep in mind that oven-roasted garlic is much milder and sweeter than raw garlic. You might use an entire roasted bulb of garlic as a spread on a couple of pieces of toast, for example. So good!
When you’re ready to use roasted garlic, all you need to do is squeeze the bulb. You can also use a small fork to pick out individual cloves.
Use oven-roasted garlic in
- hummus
- baba ganoush
- mashed potatoes
- roasted garlic butter
- Sauces
- as a spread on toast
- as a pizza topping
- as a sandwich spread
How to Store Roasted Garlic
In the oven, you can make lots of roasted garlic! It’s easy to store any leftovers.
