Easy to Make Blue Corn Tortilla Recipe

  • Author: From the Masabrosa brand instant blue corn masa package
  • Yield: 16-18 tortillas 1x

Description

This blue corn tortilla recipe is so easy to make. This recipe for homemade tortillas only has 2 ingredients, instant blue corn masa, and water! Homemade tortillas are so tasty and you’ll make them often once you discover how simple and quickly they can be made!

Ingredients

Scale

2 Cups Masasbrosa Instant Blue Corn Masa

1 1/8 Cups of Water (may need to add a bit more if the dough mix is dry)

Instructions

  1. Place the Masabroso blue corn masa in a large bowl. Pour the water into the masa, and mix thoroughly for 2-3 minutes until forming a firm dough ball (if the dough feels dry, add 1 or 2 tablespoons water).
  2. Divide dough into smaller dough balls (the larger the dough ball, the larger the tortilla), 16-18 small balls. Cover the dough balls with a damp kitchen towel to keep them moist.

  3. Using a tortilla press (make sure to utilize two plastic sheets, like a cling wrap, between the press), flatten the dough balls into a 5-6 inch diameter tortilla.
  4. Carefully peel the tortilla off the plastic sheets and place it on a very hot ungreased skillet (about 450+ degrees). A cast-iron skillet works very well.
  5. Turn the tortilla over after about 20-30 seconds. Allow to cook another 20-30  seconds and turn over one final time for 15-20 seconds.
  6. Once cooked, cover the tortilla to keep warm and pliable.

Notes

  • Make blue corn tortilla chips by cutting the cooked tortillas into triangles and cooking them in the oven until crisp.
  • These blue corn tortillas are gluten-free and made without oil and salt.
  • If you do not have a tortilla press, place the masa dough between two pieces of cling wrap, and use heavy books, a heavy skillet, or a rolling pin to flatten the dough.
