Easy to Make Blue Corn Tortilla Recipe

Homemade Blue Corn Tortillas

Blue corn tortillas are so easy to make! This recipe for homemade tortillas only has 2 ingredients, instant blue corn masa, and water. The main ingredient, blue corn masa, isn’t always available at local grocery stores, so when my daughter and I recently planned on making blue corn tortillas together, we purchased the Masabrosa brand 2 lb. bag of instant blue corn on Amazon. The recipe and instructions for making the tortillas are conveniently printed on the back of the bag.

How to make Blue Corn Tortillas

Masabrosa brand of Instant Blue Corn Masa purchased from Amazon.

The ingredients for the recipe are 2 cups of Masabrosa instant blue corn masa, which is like blue corn flour, and 1 1/8 cups of warm water (or a bit more).

Instant blue corn masa, and water.

Place the Masabroso blue corn masa in a large bowl. Pour the water into the masa, and mix thoroughly for 2-3 minutes until forming a firm dough ball. The amount of water you use depends. If the dough feels dry, add 1 or 2 additional tablespoons of water.

Mixing water and the instant blue corn masa together.

The consistency is similar to a ball of Play-Doh, or at least that’s what it reminds me of.

A ball of masa dough.

Divide dough into smaller dough balls (the larger the dough ball, the larger the tortilla), 16-18 small balls. Cover the dough balls with a damp kitchen towel to keep them moist.

Making small balls of masa dough.

Using a tortilla press (make sure to utilize two plastic sheets between the press), flatten the fresh masa dough balls into a 5-6 inch diameter tortilla. The plastic sheets (some kind of cling wrap such as Glad plastic wrap or Saran Wrap) help keep the dough from sticking to the press. My daughter heard that you can reuse a plastic bag used for produce in the grocery store. We tried it and it works really well. You wash and dry them of course, and the slightly sticky dough for the blue tortilla will easily peel off the plastic after being pressed.

Carefully peel the tortilla off the plastic sheets and place it on a very hot ungreased skillet (about 450+ degrees). A cast-iron skillet works very well.

Cooking the blue corn tortillas.

Turn the tortilla over after about 20-30 seconds. Allow to cook another 20-30  seconds and turn over one final time for 15-20 seconds. As the tortilla cooks, it puffs up a bit.

Once cooked, cover the tortilla with a clean kitchen towel to keep warm and pliable.

Pressing the Tortillas

Victoria brand tortilla press.

A tortilla press is very convenient to use for making tortillas. For this recipe, I used the Victoria brand tortilla press which I purchased on Amazon. It’s very easy to use. All you do is place plastic wrap on the bottom of the tortilla press, place a small blue masa harina ball of dough in the center, cover the dough ball with another sheet of plastic wrap, and close the handle. You don’t have to close the handle and apply any force. Just closing the press will flatten the tortilla perfectly.

If you don’t have a press, no worries. Just place the masa dough ball between 2 sheets of plastic wrap on a flat surface and press with something such as a stack of heavy cookbooks, or a heavy skillet, or just use a rolling pin. Make sure you get the dough tortilla thin whichever way you chose to press it.

Blue Corn Tortillas are a little different!

  • Blue Corn tortillas, as opposed to white corn tortillas or yellow corn tortillas, are slightly sweeter and have an earthy flavor.
  • Blue corn tortillas supposedly have a higher nutritional value, and if this is the case, that’s a nice bonus because they really taste great!

Serve them up like you would any other tasty tortillas!

I don’t think I’ve ever met a person who doesn’t like Mexican food! The blue color of the tortillas is a fun change and I plan on making these again for friends. The good news is that all of your favorite taco fillings will taste great in a blue corn tortilla, black beans, pinto beans, a little vegan sour cream, guacamole, salsa, or whatever you like!

My daughter and I made vegan chicken tacos (using soy curls) in a mole sauce and topped them off with a little vegan crema. They were so good.

If you make these tortillas, you can store any of the leftover cooked tortillas in the refrigerator for a couple of days. They need to be stored in an airtight container or zip-lock bag though. Just reheat them in a cast iron skillet. I like to turn the gas burner on the stove and heat them quickly over the open flame. Please do not burn yourself if you try this though!

Leftover tortillas are great for a taco snack! In addition to tacos, you can make blue corn tortilla chips! Just crisp them up in the oven!
