3 vegan pizza topping combinations to try!
We have a lot of pizza parties at our house, and everyone (including those not on a vegan diet) loves these pizzas!
Each pizza topping combination will be enough to make 2 10-12″ pizzas.
1. Red onion, rosemary, and pistachio
This pizza is definitely a pizza party favorite. The topping combination of red onion, rosemary, and pistachio nuts is easy to assemble.
You will need…
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced into half-moon pieces
- 2 tablespoons chopped rosemary
- 1/2 cup chopped pistachios
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- A pinch of kosher salt (plus more to taste)
To make the pizza, mix the red onion, chopped rosemary, pistachios, a pinch of salt, and olive oil toppings in a small bowl. Evenly spread the topping mixture on the pizza dough. When the pizza comes out of the oven, sprinkle it with a little salt to taste. This pizza smells and tastes so good, it’s hard not to eat the whole thing.
Cut into slices and enjoy plant-based pizza!
2. Potato, arugula (optional)
The first time I ever had potato pizza, I was in Rome. Carb (the potato) on Carb (the crispy pizza crust) is so good. So Italian too!
You will need…
- 3 small yellow potatoes, boiled, peeled, and sliced
- A few drizzles of extra virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt to taste
- Optional-a handful of arugula dressed with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice
- Optional-chopped rosemary
Toss the sliced potato slices with a few drizzles of extra virgin olive oil, coating them well, and add a bit of kosher salt. Here you can also add some chopped rosemary if you like that flavor. It’s optional.
Layer the potatoes over the pizza dough.
You do want to make sure you are generous with the drizzles of olive oil. As you layer the potato slices, make sure the dough is getting coated with some olive oil as well. Do this with your hands. No fancy gadget is required!
After the pizza is baked, add additional salt to taste. Optional and very good is to top the potato pizza with a handful of arugula that has been dressed in a bit of olive oil, lemon, and salt.
3. Tomato sauce, oregano, basil, garlic
You will need…
- 2 cups whole canned whole tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more to drizzle
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
- a bit of dried oregano
- 5-8 leaves of fresh basil
- kosher salt to taste
In a bowl or container, crush the whole canned tomatoes with your hands, and add the olive oil. Tear half of the basil leaves into pieces, add to the tomato sauce, and quickly mix with a spoon.
Spread the tomato marinara pizza sauce over your pizza dough, and add thinly sliced pieces of garlic, and a few sprinkles of dried oregano. Dried oregano can be strong. You don’t want to overdo it.
Once the pizza is cooked, drizzle it with some olive oil, add a tiny sprinkle of kosher salt to taste, and the remaining pieces of torn basil. Feel free to sprinkle some red pepper flakes on top of a pizza as well, if you like a little heat!
In Italy, marinara pizzas are very common. Usually, it’s just the sauce and a bit of oregano. That being said, you will want to make sure the tomatoes you use are really good since they are an important topping ingredient.
I personally think the Bianco Dinapoli brand of canned tomatoes is the best. I buy mine at Whole Foods or you can get them online.
